McHale Landscape Design grows the foundation of exceptional landscapes from the ground up. As your single-source partner for design, construction, and ongoing maintenance, we even cultivate many of the trees, shrubs, and perennials used in your project, giving you greater quality, consistency, and confidence in the project from the very beginning.
More Than Just a Nursery
McHale’s Nursery Farm is far more than a place where plants are grown: it’s an essential part of our integrated design-build philosophy. By cultivating the plant material ourselves, we maintain greater oversight throughout your project while ensuring the landscapes we create reflect the same standards of craftsmanship and quality that define every aspect of our work.
Today, the farm encompasses 35 acres of tree production and two acres dedicated to container-grown plant material. Our team carefully selects, grows, and maintains a diverse inventory of trees, shrubs, and perennials that are installed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Stewardship & Respect for the Land
The original McHale Farm Nursery, known as “The Farm,” was purchased in 1985 as a 15-acre former tobacco farm in Maryland. The owner benefited from the State of Maryland tobacco buyout plan and then sold the property to Kevin and Steve McHale.
While the property’s sandy clay loam offered excellent potential, significant soil restoration was required before it could support nursery production. Through years of stewardship, the property was transformed into a thriving nursery that continues to support McHale’s projects today. The farm also reflects our respect for the land itself. A grove of native White Pine trees planted years earlier by local Boy Scouts remains on the property, where those once-young saplings have matured into towering trees that continue to shape the landscape and honor its history.
Quality Begins at the Source
One of the greatest advantages of maintaining our own nursery is quality control. Rather than relying entirely on outside suppliers, McHale carefully monitors the health, development, and readiness of many of the plants selected for your landscape. Every tree, shrub, and perennial receives consistent care before ever arriving at your property.
This also provides greater confidence during construction. Because much of our plant material is grown and maintained within our operation, we can better coordinate availability, preserve consistent quality standards, and deliver landscapes that establish beautifully.
Better Plants. Better Landscapes.
Exceptional landscapes depend on exceptional plant material. Access to mature trees and carefully cultivated specimens allows our designers to create immediate visual impact while supporting the long-term health and character of your landscape.
Instead of selecting from whatever happens to be available, our team works with plant material that has been thoughtfully grown to meet our standards. Combined with decades of horticultural knowledge, this capability allows McHale to design landscapes that are both visually stunning and built to flourish for generations to come.
A True Single-Source Advantage
By integrating plant production with landscape architecture, construction, carpentry, masonry, and maintenance, we provide a seamless experience that few firms can match. Every single part of your project works together because each part is guided by one team committed to creating outdoor environments that continue to grow long after installation is complete.
